One thing I noticed is that Kevin Russo was one the only players to actually get a big hit in that series, at least compared to the un-injured All-Stars at the corners. Any fan of any team that tries to use the “injuries” card, can’t say anything to a Mets team that lost eight former All-Stars last year and something like $70 or 80 million on the DL last year.

Get better depth. That’s why “guys like Angel Pagan” are having fantastic seasons because we prepared for it. Randy Winn and Marcus Thames are on Cashman. They’re not bad players, they’re just not very good ones.

I’m not using the “injuries” card. What I am saying is that it’s May baseball and ultimately, any team will be playing with players in slumps, players will be out injured, etc. Baseball is about one thing, OCTOBER. Ultimately, it’s nice perhaps to the fans that the Yankees and Mets play every year, but the game has lost luster and significance. If you are a Met fan, I sure hope you care a lot more when the Mets play the Phillies, Braves, Marlins, and Nats, than when they play the Yankees. If you care more when they play the Yankees, you have a problem.

When did I say anything about that? Mets fans used the Yankees for momentum, they weren’t the series we cared about during this homestand, because Phillies came to town.

We got back-to-back shutouts of the Phillies, and I don’t hear ANYONE talking about the Yankees in the land of National League baseball in New York.

Phillies, Braves, Nationals, Marlins… that’s who matter. The Yankees will always say the series doesnt matter… when they lose it.

Bottomline, the Subway Series was immensely important for the Mets. We got momentum to get from 7 games back of the Phillies to 3 games back in four straight games. The Subway Series is for the fairweather fans to rip on each other. All the Mets get is the Empire State Building glowing blue and orange, and serious confidence going into a real rivalry series. That’s what matters.

Well I think we’re going to agree in the middle here. A lot of my point is that hardcore fans really don’t care about the series. What’s more important is winning your division games and I agree, the Mets taking it to the Phillies is way more important for them than any Subway Series. if for some reason, beating the Yankees helped give them momentum, that’s fine. I think that momentum could have come the same from beating the Astros, but whatever works. I think you got my point though in that your division games matter o whole hell of a lot more than any subway series because ultimately, the only time the Subway Series has mattered was in 2000 when it was the World Series.

We do both meet in the middle a bit, because it’s hard to really know how much the Subway Series matters until we see it in hindsight. In the immediate aftermath, a shutout sweep of the Phillies to get the Mets from 7 GB to 2 GB in five days, the Subway Series sure looks like it mattered to the Mets players. Who knew a tough homestand against last year’s best two teams could be a good thing?

We could look back on this being the spark that got the Mets back in the race for good, or we could see it as an abberation. Right now it sure seems like it mattered to the Mets, but not the Yankees, as both have them have gotten hot in their next series.
