I’m not sure how well the video worked out, so here’s what I said:
Earlier this week, sources came out claiming that Ryan Braun used Performance Enhancing Drugs. If he doesn’t win his appeal and the reports are confirmed, Braun’s MVP award should be taken away. Braun’s failed drug test was taken during the postseason, so that means Braun was using PEDs during the course of his MVP season. If players can be kept out of the Hall of Fame for their PED use, players can be stripped of awards too.

Sorry everybody, I probably should of worded the debate claim a little differently. So my point is that it’s not just an attack on Ryan Braun, but an anti-PED statement.

I have to agree with Andy. Though, there’s something else that should be looked at as well. If Barry Bonds wasn’t stripped of his all time home run record, what makes you think that Braun will be stripped of his MVP if he winds up testing positive? The MLB will keep these records in tact. Even Jose Canseco when he won the award and is a known steroid user, is still the MVP of the 1988 season. It still has not been stripped and given to Mike Greenwell of the Red Sox who finished second behind him. As much as I do agree with Yonis’ stance on stripping him if proven positive, the simple fact is that the league will not take the award away from him.

First of all, Bonds has an asterisk next to that record and he was stripped of the highest honor, the Hall of Fame.

I agree that we need to hold judgment until all the facts have been put on the table. It wouldn’t be the first time a “source” did not pan out. Until there is substantial proof beyond a doubt, it is what it is, an unsubstantiated story.

Having said that, if it is confirmed, Braun should get punished to the full extent! Coming off the heels of Bonds, Clemens, A-Rod and so forth, this flies in the face of Major League Baseball’s image adjustment which took a major hit in recent past. This would be one of the most egregious violations given the heavyweights of the game that have been taken to task recently, which would make Braun’s violation (if confirmed) brazen enough to warrant whatever penalties deemed necessary.

Mike, I totally agree with you, if you are found to be cheating you should be punished for it, but it’s an award and not something that you can just lightly take away from someone. They stripped Reggie Bush of his Heisman and do people still not refer to him as a Heisman Trophy winner?

Stats are one thing to be taken away, because they’re measurable and concrete, but awards are a whole different story. Even if Braun’s violation is upheld it may well be on a very weak “technicality” that may not be his fault and I don’t think that should preclude him from keeping this award or really keeping his reputation intact. I’ll take trying to stay healthy in real life over testing positive in a game any day of the week.

So Mike, I sounds like you voted for me: “if it is confirmed, Braun should get punished to the full extent!”

If it is confirmed, I would prefer to see a substantial suspension as opposed to stripping an award if you pinned me down. However, with the league taking a hard line stance on the issue and they have made it clear that you cheat at your own risk, then I would have a hard time arguing if they decided to take it from him. So if your argument is it is proven without a shadow of doubt that he cheated, I would lean your way. If you are saying take it right now, with what we know at this point, I wouldn’t.

Either way, you have to let it play out and see how strong the case really is before you do anything, in my mind.
