Jose Reyes is having a great season but people forget hes injury prone
I don’t hate Reyes BECAUSE people hate Jeter. I just think people are dumb when they say Jeter is overrated, meanwhile there are talks of Jose Reyes receiving a Carl-Crawford like deal. Before this season, the last time Reyes hit .300 was in 2006. Sure, he steals a lot of bases. Defensively, he’s really not that spectacular. He has made 25 errors in the last season and a half. I thought it was ridiculous when CRAWFORD received such a huge contract, so naturally I hate the idea that Reyes may receive something along those lines. But at least Crawford has been more consistent power-wise in the past (he sucks this year so that deal looks even more stupid now). I don’t like the idea of giving someone a huge HUGE contract based on the 1 year before free-agency. If you look at Reyes’s stats before this year, the numbers, aside from stolen bases, are not impressive enough for such a large contract. To give him a big deal similar to that of Crawford is simple over-assessing his value, thus Reyes is OVERRATED. Speed, especially on a guy with a history of leg problems, is just not worth that money.
I will not say Jeter is overrated because just look at all he has done but he is overpaid like much of the sports world is. There is no denying the impact a healthy Reyes makes on a team and he is one of the best sportstops in the game probably just behind Hanley Ramierez. He is going to get paid
I’m not arguing that he is or isn’t going to get paid. I’m arguing that he doesn’t deserve it and he’s overrated. I don’t care what kind of an “impact” they make – players about speed are not worth $100+ million deals! I know he’s hitting for a high average THIS year and that’s great. But if he was on any other team I don’t think he’d stand out as much. He’s the best guy on a pretty stinky team, a team that’s in NY and is always in the headlines. I’ve heard several cases about Reyes not hustling or losing focus in the field. I think he’s lazy. He’s probably only doing better this year b/c he’s trying to earn a big ridiculous contract. Whatever.
