WWE Releases a Superstar: Trend or Isolated Incident

Wwe release

Remember when Chavo Guerrero was important to the long term plan of the WWE?  Me neither.

However, I do remember when Chavo Guerrero was a respected veteran on the WWE roster and a man chosen to work with up and coming talents due to being a notably accomplished worker.  That was two days ago, but it is no longer a true statement.  Chavo Guerrero is officially unemployed.

At first, I thought this was going to be the opening of the floodgates.  As I've alluded to before, the WWE often does a bit of "spring cleaning" if you will after Wrestlemania.  This leads to the release of many underutilized talents that are no longer or were never held in high regard by the company.  As of this writing, 2011 has not opened the floodgates.....yet.

It appears that Chavo Guerrero's release is not the start of a summer cleaning given Guerrero's post firing comments.  From what I've gathered, Guerrero was no longer happy in the WWE and attributes this feeling to a lack of push.  In Chavo's mind, he deserved a more important position in the company and is leaving for "greener pastures" if he can find any.  I'm not so sure he can.

If Chavo's last name was Goldstein, would this be news any more than Jimmy Wang Yang being let go?  The truth is, Chavo's value is in his experience and last name.  Yes, he's a solid worker and a reliable hand, but would he have a job all these years if he wasn't related to Eddie?  Probably not.

No disrespect to Chavo as I've always been a fan of his in ring work, but his character base and mass appeal have always been his downfall.  Other than his run with Eddie, when was he ever an exciting television character?  He wasn't, so his job of putting others over was pretty ideal given his skillset and appeal.  He obviously disagreed and will try and find new life in the wrestling world, but I feel like this may have been his peak.

I suppose he could go to TNA and head up Mexican America but that group is terrible and TNA shouldn't have interest in bringing in someone who won't bring in fans with them.  Then there's Ring of Honor which he won't go to due to his age.  I suspect Mexico could be a logical destination given his heritage and maybe he could get a nostalgia run under the Guerrero name.  Still, none of these options will pay more than WWE nor will they make him any bigger a star.  Heck, the guy is almost 41, how much more does he have to offer anyway?

Again, I really wish the best for Chavo Guerrero as he always seemed like someone worthy of respect, but I'm not sure about this decision.  I hope he finds happiness, but don't expect him to show up on American TV any time soon.  If he ends up leading Mexican America, it means that group is still around in 3 months which is a bad sign to begin with.  Let's hope he goes to Mexico where he'll at least be respected and revered for what he does best, put on good matches.
