Red Sox Split Doubleheader with Mariners
The Red Sox rode Josh Beckett to a 5-3 win in Game 1 of their doubleheader with the Mariners, but couldn't crack Seattle's Felix Hernandez in Game 2. The young righty shut down Boston as he has throughout his career, leading the M's to a 4-2 victory. The Sox took two of three in the series and wrapped up the homestand with a 6-3 record, still trailing the Rays and Yankees by five and a half games in the AL East and/or wild card.
Daniel Nava came through with a big 2 RBI single in Game 1. J.D Drew hit a home run in Game 2, but it wasn't enough to get the sweep. Things were off to an ominous start in the nightcap when Adrian Beltre was tossed before the starts of the third inning. The third baseman had struck out in the bottom of the second on a disputed changeup. While having a good-natured chat with former teammate Hernandez prior to the start of the inning, Beltre was ejected by home plate umpire Dan Bellino.
Sox manager Terry Francona came out to defend Beltre and was sent to the showers as well. Tim Wakefield made an emergency start as well yesterday evening after Jon Lester was scratched. The lefty was moved back to start Friday night against the Rays in place of Daisuke Matsuzaka who's battling back issues.
Pedroia Surgery Possible
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia could undergo season-ending surgery to help repair a fracture in his left foot. The former MVP was put back on the disabled list last week after attempting to come back from a broken foot sustained prior to the All-Star Game.
