The Phillies were toothless again tonight as what started out as a slump has turned into a full scale recession of offense.
The shame of all this offensive futility is that there have been some good pitching performances wasted. Today Jamie Moyer continued his rebound from his early season struggles to throw 6 strong innings in which he only allowed 1 earned run but saw his record drop to 5-5. The good thing, however, was that his ERA also dropped to a very respectable 4.26, not bad for a 5th starter.
This offense has become downright brutal to watch during this stretch. Remember, the run that was scored last night wasn't even earned. I remember watch Pedro's perfect game spoiled because his team didn't score a run for him and he eventually lost the perfecto and the no hitter in the 10th inning. Today, 4 hits were all they Phillies could muster and Shane Victorino had two of them, including the only extra base hit, a double. The Phillies also went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. Kind of tough to string 2 hits together when you only get 4 for the game.
Now would be a good time to wake up the bats with a road trip to Atlanta starting tomorrow at 1:05. Joe Blanton will take on Tommy Hanson.
