As the Jet players are about to enter training camp tomorrow there is one big question that hangs over the entire Jets organization, from the front office all the way down to the Fans. Will Darrelle Revis show up for the start of camp tomorrow afternoon? At this point I would be forced to guess that no, he isn’t going to be there. However all hope is not lost; there are still two situations that could lead to Revis being there at the start of camp. The first is now that the two sides have resumed negotiations that Revis will sense that they are making progress and show up to camp as show of good faith. The second is that Revis will be given the same kind of Band-Aid contract that the Jaguars gave to Maurice Jones-Drew. Although both of these circumstances are both possible, one seems to be much more likely than the other.
At this point I would image that it is too late for a Band-Aid contract to be signed before the start of camp tomorrow. Although it is the most ideal situation, I just can’t imagine Revis walking into camp with a brand new contract by tomorrow, it’s just not enough time. My hope is that although Revis is searching to get the money that he rightfully deserves, that he desires even more to save face as the leader that he is on this young Jets team. The Jets have all the talent in the world in their secondary, but that doesn’t hide the fact that they are still replacing 3 out of the 5 starters from last year. In order for the group to gel as a unit and play together as one destructive force, they need Revis there to lead the way.
The reality of the situation is that nobody really knows what Revis is going to do except for the Island himself. He says that he wants to be a Jet for the rest of his career let’s see him put his money where his mouth is. If he truly wants to be a Jet for the long haul then he would show up in camp and ask for a Band-Aid contract. He should respect the fact that the Jets worst nightmare is to see him playing for another team in three years. However they also need to deal with the fact that they still need to sign 2 of their other star players to extensions. If he want the Jets to be good for years to come he needs both Nick Mangold and David Harris right there with him, and both of their contracts are up after this next season. Darrelle certainly deserves to make more money than he is scheduled to make this season. It is almost a slap to the face that going into the season, the NFL’s best defensive player is only slotted to be the 8th highest defensive back on his own team. This means that pressure also needs to be put on the Jets, they need to stop hiding behind the uncertain labor agreement and give Revis his money. It is understandable that they don’t want to give away to much money when they don’t know the financial scope of the NFL after this season. BUT they too need to start showing their players that they are willing to put their money (literally speaking) where their mouth is.
Let’s hope that the two sides can come to some sort of agreement very soon. I pray that I and my fellow Jet fans will soon again officially be able to proclaim, IN REVIS ISLAND WE TRUST!
