"What GM Brian Burke and the Toronto Maple Leafs Need Now"

The Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brian Burke have been very Busy this off season with the acquisitions of James Van Riemsdyk, Jay Mcclement and Keith Aucoin too add depth.

The first question is about what the Toronto Maple Leafs need: A Goaltender, a first line center, defensive core and the possibility of adding another forward.

The Maple Leafs have been in talks with many teams including Vancouver, Los Angeles and Calgary regarding acquiring a goaltender. Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke has been in deep discussions with Canucks GM Mike Gillis regarding Starting Goaltender Roberto Luongo. Talks between the two GM's started too cool down as the weeks went on born to the fact that Mike Gillis was asking too much of Brian Burke. Now that the Maple Leafs and Brian Burke were being spectacle of Roberto Luongo's asking’s, the Leafs made an Offer to the Los Angeles Kings and their GM Dean Lombardi regarding backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier. Bernier asked for a trade earlier this summer for the reason being he believes he has the potential to be an NHL starting goaltender and not the Kings backup goaltender behind Jonathan Quick. Bernier would also like the chance to play close to home in Laval Quebec.

The second acquisition that the Maple Leafs need is a first line center. Top names like Ryan Getzlaf, Paul Stastny and Patrick Marleau are all names rumored to be on GM Brian Burkes list of possibilities. The San Jose Sharks sent of a statement saying Patrick Marleau is not being shopped. Paul Stastny and Ryan Getzlaf are the two names that would be preferred to the Maple Leafs and their fans. If Brian Burke does not acquire a first line center before the season occurs, the Maple Leafs have the choice to use James Van Riemsdyk on the first line or Mikhail Grabovski who is said to be being shopped by Burke.

With Luke Schenn being dealt to the Philadelphia Flyers for forward James Van Riemsdyk, the Maple Leafs have an empty hole in their defense. Brian Burke has a big choice to make, keep the defensive roster he has right now, deal a defenseman in a trade for a goaltender or a top line forward and then play newly drafted first round pick defenseman Morgan Rielly on the Maple Leafs in the 2012-2013 season.

With the Leafs needing a first line center Burke would need to give up players on roster. The possibility of giving up another defenseman in a trade was already talked about, but what about the possibility of having too trade away a couple forwards. If the Maple Leafs were to trade away more than one forward in a deal, Burke would have to make a decision on who would play in that roster spot. A possibility is acquiring a forward coming back considering if they were too acquire a top line center and starting goaltender with having James Van Riemsdyk switched to the center position and having Mcclement and Steckel on the last two lines. The Maple Leafs centers are filled with James Van Riemsdyk, Mikhail Grabovski, Jay Mcclement, David Steckel, Tyler Bozak and Tim Connolly.

For now we have to wait and see what moves and trades the Toronto Maple Leafs and GM Brian Burke will make now.
