Week3 Premier League Preview: Will Spurs Score 10, Is It Lucky Number Six For Chelsea Yet Again?

Football-portsmouth

1-0 up at half-time and then Jermain Defoe went on a rampage.

That is the best way to describe Tottenham's record 9-1 victory over Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane this time last year.

By the end of the game, 'JD' had scored FIVE in what Latics manager Robert Martinez describes as his 'most painful experience' as a Premier League manager.

He will hope to prolong this career stage by at least a week this afternoon, after shocking 0-4 and 0-6 home defeats to Blackpool and Chelsea in the club's first two matches of the season.

Spurs, who progressed to the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in their history, are unbeaten in three and looked particularly strong at home to Manchester City in their first game.

Defoe, despite his back troubles, will have a great chance to add to this midweek goal. He is likely to start alongside Peter Crouch, whose confidence will be sky-high after his midweek hat-trick against BSC Young Boys.

Carlo Cudicini will start in goal just months after a career-threatening motorcycle accident in place of injured Brazilian Heurelho Gomes. The home team's only other injury absentees, aside from keeper are long-term concerns David Bentley, Jamie O'Hara, Alan Hutton and Johnathon Woodgate.

Wilson Palacios will replace Croat Luka Modric, who picked up a niggle on Wednesday, in central midfield. And the management may decide to rest influential defender Ledley King.

Tottenham should have far too much firepower for the visitors and, while a 9-1 repeat is unlikely, back the Lilywhites to triumph by at least two goals.

Probable Line Up (4-4-2):

Cudicini; Corluka, Dawson, Kaboul, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Palacios, Huddlestone, Bale; Defoe, Crouch

Subs: Pletikosa, Bassong, Walker, Jenas, Kranjcar, Dos Santos, Pavlyuchenko

Prediction:

TOTTENHAM 3-1 Wigan

Other fixtures

For once, last season's other three Top Four teams will also be in action later today.

Chelsea and Manchester United's players will fancy their chances of scoring a hatful of goals as they take on Stoke and West Ham respectively.

The Blues have opened the season with two 6-0 victories and, while they will not repeat that feat against a far more obdurate, organized and physical team in Stoke, they should be backed for the three points.

Red Devils fans will know that their team faces opponents in dire straits at Old Trafford at 17:30 GMT. In this game, Wayne Rooney should be expected to burst back into goalscoring form, while Berbatov's guile and movement may also see him get onto the scoresheet.

Elsewhere, Blackburn may be the first team to beat a top four side when they 'entertain' Arsenal; Blackpool will fancy their chances of a second-ever Premier League win at home to Fulham; Wolves and Newcastle will almost certainly cancel each other out.

Other Predictions:

Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Arsenal

Blackpool 2-1 Fulham

Chelsea 2-0 Stoke City

Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-1 Newcastle United

Manchester United 4-0 West Ham United
