Tough Times For Vikings Receivers

It has been a rough month for Percy Harvin. After losing his grandmother and battling migraines for all of August, Percy was finally back on the practice field. That lasted all of a day before he fell victim to a migraine attack that caused him to collapse on the field before ultimately being taken to the hospital. It was a scary turn of events for both Harvin and the team; they had hoped this issue was temporarily in the rear view mirror. On the plus side, Percy had a similar episode at Florida and was able to rebound fairly quickly. Brad Childress was also downplaying the incident and it looks as though the perfect storm of conditions were in play to trigger such a debilitating migraine. However, the fact that the team and various doctors are having a difficult time getting a handle on this issue is certainly concerning. While it hasn’t significantly affected Harvin’s career to this point, it still remains a lingering problem, and you would hate to see such a promising career cut short due to a medical issue.

The news is even worse for Sidney Rice. He underwent hip surgery recently and could miss the first eight weeks of the regular season. It is an untimely surgery and apparently Rice just was not able to shake the discomfort in his hip that has been flaring up since the NFC Championship game. It is hard to tell exactly what happened here. It was originally reported that three doctors said surgery was not necessary; now it is said that two of the three actually did recommend surgery. Regardless, something went awry and now Rice and the team are put in a tough spot for the 2010 season. The offense will just not be able to be as explosive without Sidney’s presence.

In an effort to merely get warm bodies at the position, the team signed Javon Walker, whose biggest splash in the NFL is being on the receiving end of one of the worst contracts ever given out. It is unclear what, if any role Walker will play and he very well could just be camp fodder who is cut before the season begins. What was considered to be one of the Vikings deepest positions heading into the season is now awfully thin. The team and its fans will have to hope that Bernard Berrian can return to form and an unsung hero – perhaps camp hero Logan Payne – can step up and be productive in the absence of Sidney Rice.
