Here we have a couple of news items from the Steel City along with another young signal caller who is opting not to throw at this year's combine.

  • Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers and (NT) Casey Hampton have come to an agreement on a three year $21.3 million dollar deal. Hampton is a huge piece in the success of the Steelers defense and has been a consistent performer for many years. The contract created the opportunity for the Steelers to place the franchise tag on another player. Which they did when they handed it to (K) Jeff Reed.

While I feel Reed is a decent kicker, is he really worth a franchise tag designation? From what I remember last year he choked on more than one occasion. Kickers are like women, there are plenty of them in the sea.

  • Combine Notes

The number of quarterbacks actually throwing the ball during drills is dwindiling by the minute. With Sam Bradford, Jimmy Claussen and Tim Tebow already out of throwing drills we can now add the name of Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.

McCoy is opting not to throw to allow further time for his injured shoulder to heal. He injured the shoulder early on during the BCS National Championship when he took a direct hit to the shoulder blade of his throwing arm. Though there was said to be no structural damage it  sounds like McCoy is still suffering from sleepy arm (numb) much like what kept him out the rest of his last college game. He is set to throw at his Pro Day which is scheduled for March 31st.

With all of these more known quarterbacks not performing what is most critical to their position this weekend, it gives a chance to the lesser known prospects to raise there values. Look for names like Sean Canfield, Max Hall, Zac Robinson and Jevan Snead to perform well to climb past some of the combine non-throwers. Then there are the even lesser know players like Dan Lefevour, John Skelton and Mike Kafka he could use this opening to be the come out of no where guys.
