A couple of news worthy items this afternoon around the league. Two mouths moving in two different directions.
- Miami Dolphins
The Phins released non-stop talking (LB) Joey Porter today. Porter fell out of favor with Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano and had his on the field role reduced. This didn't sit well with one of the best trash talkers in the league, as he asked for his outright release earlier this month. The Dolphins granted his wish as they want to move to a move youthful defensive group anyways.
Woah Nelly! It looks as if the Dolphins acted a little hastily and had to add Porter back to the roster and cannot release him until March 5 for salary cap reasons. Don't they have people that research this stuff before they act? If not, I'm available I don't have a paying job right now.
- NFL
The league announced that Commisioner Roger "The Sheriff" Goodell has been extended 5 years to his current contract (through 2015). The current owners mouth piece has had his ups and downs since stepping in for Paul Tagibue. He established a strong disciplinary policy for off the field incidents for players in the league, but has also had some major mishaps. Like, the continuation of games played in England and even envisioning a franchise over seas is ludicrous. Lets not forget the possibilty of either moving or establishing another franchise in Los Angeles when a couple have already failed. Then the moving of the Pro Bowl to before the Super Bowl this year which rendered it even less relevant than it was already before. Which almost seemed impossible to do.
This next year and a half will be Goodell's true legacy in the NFL with the expiration of the current CBA and a possible lockout in 2011 for NFL. We will now see if his allegience is truly to the NFL and not just the NFL owners.
