USC and athletic director Mike Garrett has been oddly silent in light of the NCAA infractions and penalties announced yesterday.
Now we know why. Garrett opened his sizeable yap to some USC boosters last night.
“As I read the decision by the NCAA, all I could get out of all of this was … I read between the lines and there was nothing but a lot of envy, and they wish they all were Trojans,” Garrett said to cheers Thursday night at the San Francisco Airport Marriott.
Brilliant. If there were any hopes of USC getting some penalties reduced, Garrett might have just dashed them. It's like getting pulled over in a Porsche going 120 mph and telling the cop they're "just jealous."
Of course, I guess Garrett already thumbed his nose at the NCAA by hiring Lane Kiffin, who offered his own brand of genius yesterday.
“Regardless of what happens in that appeal, we know this: SC is more powerful than anything else,” Kiffin said. “The university, the football program, the basketball program -- no matter what they try to do to us, it won’t matter.”
What it this, the civil rights movement? Are you going to start singing We Shall Overcome? Christ, you're a football team. Shut up.
