Sunday's 5 Hour Energy 500 at Pocono marked the end of the probation period for Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch, and Harvick made sure the Busch knew their feud was not over just yet. On the second lap Harvick ran Busch about as low as you could possibly go down the long front straightaway. A couple of laps later Harvick got behind Busch and pushed the number 18 M&M's Toyota down the straightaway. Both drivers were subsequently warned by NASCAR and raced each other very clean to the end of the race.
Their antics made the start of yesterday's race very exciting for the fans in the stands, and makes for a very interesting story line to follow as the season continues on. But is having this feud continue a good thing for NASCAR?
As of right now it stands as just a war of words and mind games, and that is plenty fine. Harvick wanted to make sure the Busch knew that he still owes Busch. As Harvick said, "It's all a free game now. Probation's over."
So far Harvick and Busch have made it fun for the fans. It was fun to see their postrace incident at Darlington, and it was a lot of fun to watch them battle on the track at Pocono. It has also been amusing to listen to them take jabs at each other in the media.
But what if Harvick gets his payback on Busch, and in doing so takes out another driver? Nobody would want to see another driver get taken out while these two fool around with each other. Nobody would want to see Harvick get Busch back but ruin someone else's race in the process. That would not be fun to see.
If Harvick and Busch want to continue to battle it out as the season goes on, then let them. But they need to make sure that they don’t take out another driver in the process.
For Harvick, it is not a matter of if he will get his payback on Busch, but when. And hopefully nobody else will be taken out as well.
