The Green & White Show Volume XXIII
In this week’s edition of the Green & White Show with Joseph Haas & Jinx Grand, your hosts can smell regular season football on the horizon! The New York Jets closed out the exhibition portion of the schedule against the Philadelphia Eagles at MetLife Stadium. Matt Simms played a majority of the game, and played well enough to land a spot on the 53-man roster! Greg McElroy saw little time in practice or on the field, so it comes as no surprise that he didn’t make the team this year. Another name you know that won’t be in green and white this season, Joe McKnight. An injury-plagued preseason was the final nail in the coffin for McKnight’s career with Gang Green. Khalil Bell running the wildcat effectively against the Eagles, and Clyde Gates returning kicks should make McKnight’s absence easier to bear. Other notable cuts include: WR Mohamed Massaquoi, WR Zach Rogers, OT Jason Smith, DT Antonio Garay, CB Royce Adams, and K Dan Carpenter.
With the last preseason game in the books, it’s time to focus on that seventeen-week sprint to the playoffs known as the regular season. The Jets invite an old friend over for the first game, as Darrelle Revis leads his new team of Buccaneers north to take on his old running-mates. In Jets vs., your hosts give you a few things to watch for on both side of the football. Revis may’ve anticipated a chance to go against former teammate Mark Sanchez, but he’ll be staring across the line of scrimmage at rookie signal-caller Geno Smith instead. With Sanchez still recovering from that ailing shoulder, some media reports and all signs point to the former West Virginia QB as the starter for Week 1. Somewhere Greg McElroy must be thinking how he didn’t throw a pick-six on his first pass of a game, or step out the back of an endzone for a safety, or intentionally ground the football while standing in the endzone (also for a safety)… but he’s the one packing his bags after the preseason?
In What Jets Said, our old buddy Rex makes another (now weekly) appearance with his assertion that the team has yet to name an official “starter” and that the QB competition could drag on into the regular season. Is this a tactical mistake for the team? Should the Jets just pick a QB and run with him already? How about giving a guy like Matt Simms a shot? As usual, a statement from Rex leaves us with nothing but questions… and another lively segment on today’s show. Do the Jets already know who their starter is, or will be? Are they trying to avoid the appearance of flip-flopping? Do the New York Jets have a game plan for testing both QBs under live-fire, then making a decision for Week 3? The QB competition that won’t die provides another look into who has final say over who plays and who sits. What is usually a head coach’s decision has become more of a “collective” decision according to the franchise. As far as the franchise is concerned, they’re not ready to let us in on who the starter will be… so we wait, and debate!
In Rumors, Roster & The Rest, we tackle reports that have Geno Smith starting Week 1 against the Bucs. Both JG and I agree, it’s Geno Smith or bust this week! Santonio Holmes makes his way onto the roster, after a week of speculation as to what the delay could be. Hacking the NYJ for us is our player-expert Nolan Hack (@NolanHack). This week, we discuss the defensive backs. We get into Dee Milliner’s lack of playing time in the preseason, and if that will hurt him early during the regular season. Kyle Wilson may not be the best at covering receivers on the outside, but is this 2010 first-round draft pick by the Jets a BUST? Wilson was selected 29th, some notables picked AFTER him: TE Rob Gronkowski (42), DB Javier Arenas (50), WR Brandon LaFell (78), S Kam Chancellor (133) & WR Antonio Brown (195)!! Ellis Lankster and Isaiah Trufant provide depth at CB, but are the Jets in trouble covering outside receivers if either Antonio Cromartie or Dee Milliner is forced to miss snaps? Milliner has an injury history; can he hold up for all 16 games? We tackle all and more… in this week’s edition of Hackin’ the NYJ.
Lauren Beasley (@LBeasley313) joins us in this week’s edition of The Rest Report, where she updates us on the other teams in the AFC East. We start off with the sad news that Tim Tebow was cut from by the New England Patriots. Technical difficulties aside, we get into the chances Tebow had in New England, and if another team will give him a chance to be a QB. EJ Manuel has minor knee surgery but has yet to return, Kevin Kolb is recovering from a head injury and may see his career come to an end, Matt Leinart tried and failed at his attempt to steal one more NFL start… but it looks like the team will go with undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel. We get her thoughts on Jeff Tuel and Dolphins rookie Dion Jordan. Tim Tebow, Matt Leinart AND Vince Young were ALL cut today! We tackle all in this week’s edition of The Rest Report with Lauren Beasley.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Congratulations to Jinx Grand, as he’ll be interviewing young Jets fans at MetLife Stadium for the New York Jets!! Look for him on the jumbotron!!
In the Great Debate, we give our take on hot topics in sports this week. The NFL settles the multi-player concussion lawsuit for a meager $765 million! JG and I agreed completely that this was far too low a number for the plaintiffs to have settled for. We’ve touched on the topic several times, from our interview with Dr. Novicky (President of ShockStrip), to our discussions on the Crown Rule and its impact on today’s NFL. The settlement of this suit halts all investigation and discovery by the plaintiffs, which could’ve been the ultimate goal of the National Football League… a league that currently generates $9 billion annually. PREDICTIONS!! We leave you waiting no longer, and give you OUR predictions for the Jets in 2013!! Agree or disagree; plus we give you what we’re watching for against the Bucs and Pats. We discuss all and more on this week’s edition of the Green And White Show with Joseph Haas and Jinx Grand! CLICK HERE TO LISTEN and enjoy!!
