The Mets got good news, bad news, and ugly news on their corner infielders. Ike Davis' injury might have got worse, and David Wright is allowed to start baseball activity.
Ike Davis might need season ending micro-fracture surgery. The play that made this occur was a pop around the pitcher's mound where Wright and Davis collided. Watching the replay, you can see Davis' ankle go out of place. The Mets medical staff gave Davis a boot to wear, so it would heal faster, little did they know, it was going to make it worse.
Alderson thinks the boot didn't help the injury as well.
“There was some cartilage involvement through the bruising process, where maybe bone-on-bone caused the bruise, but I don’t think there was any expectation that the cartilage would be a major issue at this point,” Alderson said.
Davis said that he couldn't walk on his foot without feeling pain in his ankle.
“It never really got better the whole time, so I had to know there was something other than just a bruise,” Davis said. “It kind of makes sense that cartilage would get damaged if the bone was damaged like that because cartilage is in the joint.
Davis now has to wait three more weeks to see if his ankle heels faster, and weather or not he will need season ending surgery.
“It’s three more weeks. Hopefully, it starts healing up a little bit faster. ... Surgery is an athlete’s nightmare. But if it’s going to get me on the field again, it’s something we have to do. It’s either going to get better in three weeks or it’s not going to get better.”
For Davis, it is going to be a waiting process, what David Wright had with his injury.
David Wright got the green light to start baseball activities again, a very good sign for the Mets.
“Right now, I anticipate it’s going to be at least a couple of weeks, maybe three weeks (before he’s ready to return to the Mets), because he’s going to have to exercise, progress to full baseball activity and then play in (minor-league) games.” Alderson said.
David Wright can't wait to get on the field, and help this club win some more games, and leap the hump of over .500. The youngsters are getting tired, and he is well rested.
“With all the blows we’ve taken in the last six weeks, this is finally a positive,” Collins said. “When you saw David today, he was so fired up to be able to get back on the field. So this is really, really good news for us.”
The Mets need their corner infielders back. The Mets have lost games due to the lack of defensive knowledge in the corner infield positions. Both players have great gloves, but most of all have great bats. The Mets haven't hit many home runs this season, and bringing back Wright and Davis would be very good for this club. The Mets just need to hope for positive news on Davis, and if/when they get him back, they will be tough to beat after the all star break, with a very good bench, and few errors in the infield. Don't forget Johan Santana and the Mets are hoping he should be back after the all-star break too.
