The St.Louis Cardinals have had a wacky and wild first week. In a week that saw them face the San Diego Padres and the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Cards went 2-4 and lost 2 of 3 in each series. The Cards offense has really struggled getting out of the gate. Their batting average right now is just flat-out awful. Even guys like Albert Pujols are off to a nasty start hitting-wise. The Cards defense is also looking like it may be a problem again, the defense through the first 6 games was ok, but the infield is still looking a little sloppy, and unless they fix that quick, it may come back to haunt the Cardinals.
Matt Holliday has played only game so far this year, he had an emergency appondectomy last friday and it was said that he was out indefintaly. The good news is that it seems Matt is recovering quickly. He's been doing some minor drills with team this week and it looks like he'll be able to pinch hit at some point this weekend.
Speaking of this weekend, the Cardinals now begin a 10 game west coast road trip. On this road trip, we'll get to see just how good the Cards are this year. The road trip start this afternoon with a 3 game weekend series against the defending world champions, the Cards will face Sanchez, Cain, and Bumgarder over the course of the series, and seeing how well the Cardinals can hit off these guys will say a lot about the Cardinals offense in 2011. Jake Westbrook will start this afternoon, in his first start of the year, Westbrook got destroyed by San Diego and it seemed like he had no control at all. Today he looks to get that control back as the Cards try to spoil the Giants home opener.
