My weekly Sunday Snapshot blog gives me an opportunity to look back on my sleeper picks from the past week and rate their performance.
J.J. Hardy
I recommended the Brewers shortstop amid a second half surge. Hardy then proceeded to miss four of six games this week with a wrist injury. The Brewers were being extra cautious with Hardy since they have fallen out of the NL Central race. Hardy went 1-for-6 in the two games he did play, though his one hit was a home run. The resurgent shortstop still deserves a look in deeper mixed leagues when healthy.
Dexter Fowler
Unlike Hardy, Fowler was returning from a recent injury going into this week. However, he hit the same slump that Hardy did. Fowler reached base just three times during this fantasy scoring period after pounding opposing pitching over the past two weeks. Continue to use Fowler as a stopgap option in mixed formats, but realize the young outfielder will still be a streaky player as he attempts to realize his potential.
Gio Gonzalez
Gonzalez struggled with command in his start this week, walking more Twins batters than hit against him. The struggling A's lineup didn't back up their pitcher and Gonzalez was handed his eighth loss of the season. These starts happen on occasion when playing on a bad team. Gonzalez still has a 2.57 ERA with 20 strikeouts in his last three outings. When those stats are coupled with his 10 wins on the year he seems like a viable end of rotation option in most mixed formats.
