When former Giants wide receiver Steve Smith decided Wendsday to sign with the hated Philadelphia Eagles and join their "dream team," he knew there would be plenty of backlash from loyal New York Giant fans. Smith tried to contain the barrage of threats and curses by releasing a statement on his facebook page right after news broke of his signing.

Only a half hour after ESPN's Adam Schefter broke the story Smith wrote, "I will always cherish my time in NY and the super bowl victory.. This was obviously not an easy decision for me or something i ever expected but unfortunately the business aspect proved that the eagles wanted me to be part of their organization MUCH more than the Giants did.. A special thanks to my WR buddies, coach Gilbride, all of u amazing fans on here, and the entire giants organization for drafting me.. Time for a new beginning..."

Unfortunately for Smith, the hate messages kept coming. As a professional athlete you must be prepared to deal with such criticism and act mature, Smith did exactly that. A day after news broke of his one year $4 million deal with the Eagles, Smith again took to his facebook page to address his disgruntled and betrayed former fans.

"Instead of cursing at me and wishing my family and my knee harm, i wish you could understand that i truly wanted to stay here but that the giants DIDN'T want me here unfortunately.. thank you to my true fans for standing by me and offering your support during this time... i truly appreciate it and will miss you all, even the haters bc i know ure great people deep down and are saying what u are just because youre such passionate fans"

It was a very mature (somewhat scripted) statement, but mature and kind nonetheless. The last part about stating that his "haters" are also "great people...passionate fans" is very true and a kind thing to say about people who are at the same time wishing you harm. Although I will never forgive Smith for betraying the Giants and signing with their most hated rival, Smith has done everything he could to defuse the situation.
