Lets start with the good news from a 24-0 beatdown of the Calgary Stampeders Wednesday night.
1. Burke Dales got lots of reps as the offense was terrible no matter who was on the field. Those extra reps may prove very valuable later in the season when a directional coffin corner punt becomes required.
2. Demetrice Morley stood head and shoulders above his teammates with a 2 INT performance and had his hands on a third but couldn't squeeze it.
3. With the rainy waether dampening (or obliterating) attendance numbers, almost no one saw the game live at McMahon Stadium.
4. With Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals drawing 18 Million viewers on CBC, there was almost certainly no one watching on TV either.
5. Rioting in Vancouver over the game 7 loss prevented many people from finding out a CFL game had even been played.
And Now for the Recap:
The Stamps looked terrible in almost every facet of the game and it started on the first drive which ended in a Rob Maver missed field goal from 48 yards out after Henry Burris completed the only three passes he would on the day for a total of 17 yards.
The Stamps Defense quickly got off to a good starts as new safety Demetrice Morley picked off BC quarterback Travis Lulay on the next Lions possession.
The teams traded 3 straight 2 and outs before Lulay led the Lions to the only points they would need to win with a 16 yard TD pass to Steven Black that capped a 65 yards drive.
Lulay looked very sharp in his brief time leading the Lions offense and fans in Vancouver had better hope he stays healthy. If he gets injured though...watch out downtown Van City; we know fans there really dislike disappointment.
But back to the game...Shortly after the touchdown drive, the Stamps offence responded, going 3 yards for their third straight two and out.
The Lions took the ball at that point and took it downfield for a Paul McCallum field goal to extend the lead to 10 points.
At this time I should point out that if I took the time to write about all the failed Stampeder posessions, the Stamps and Eskimoes would have kicked off next week and you would still be reading. So in the interest of brevity, I will condense the rest of the game into a quick highlight read...
Drew Tate and Jarious Jackson in now at QB as the starters head to the warmup bikes and niether get into a real rythem although in my never humble opinion Tate was especially cursed by the dropsy fairy. Whether it was his recievers getting hit in the hands and not coming away with it or his centre throwing the ball away, Tate had a bad day at the park that wasn't entirely his fault.
Four punts later Rob Maver missed again from 48 yards out proving that his leg may be a little worse off thatn tender which was reported earlier this week.
Halftime came and went with a rugby exhibition that drew the cheers of the crowd as people were able to actually cross the goalline.
Those cheers were nothing though when compred to the cheer given at hearing the score of Game 7, at that point 2-0 Bruins.
A Zac Carlson fumble, his first of two, led to a one play drive with Kamau Peterson getting a 10 yard TD pass from Jarius Jackson that with the convert made the score 17-0
A Zac Carlson fumble, (feels like deja vu kinda hey?) stets up another BC TD although this time they had to go 46 yards for the score.
Run out the rest of the game with punts and two failed third-down gambles by the Stamps and there you have it.
