Spooner knifes Islanders

All the hype going into the two rookie games the past two nights surrounded Tyler Seguin, and in both games Seguin was not the star of the game. Tonight second round pick (45th Overall) Ryan Spooner scored both Bruins goals in the 2-1 overtime victory.

The Bruins rookies had a rough first period as they were outshot 12-4, and allowed the one and only New York Islander goal. Tony Romano scored from along the left wing boards beating Bruins goalie Michael Hutchinson.

Hutchinson went on though to make 33 saves out of the 34 he faced to earn the win. The biggest thing he may have done though was keep Islander first round pick Nino Niederreiter off the scoreboard. Nino got the first goal for the Islanders in last nights game.

“Hutchinson was good, the one goal he did let in was a bad goal,” said Providence Bruins coach Rob Murray. “After that he was lights out. Hutchinson is a guy that can win a game by himself.”

As good as Hutchinson was, Spooner stole the show scoring two goals. The first goal Spooner scored came off a puck he batted out of mid air in the second period to tie the game up at one.

“I can’t remember the last time I did it,” said Spooner about batting a puck out of mid air for a goal. “It was the first time at a high level at junior or here.”

Spooner followed up his second period goal with the game winner on a break away in overtime. Max Sauve put a pass right on Spooner’s stick to send Spooner in on the break away. Sauve assisted on both of Spooner's goals.

“I got a great pass, I shot five hole, it wasn’t anything special,” said a modest Spooner.

Spooner has a great skill set and probably could of went higher in the draft, if it was not for his size. Spooner stands at only 5’10.

“With the skill set he has he needs the puck to make things happen,” said Murray about Spooner. “I had no doubt he was going to score after watching him in practice.”

Sauve was impressive tonight, but still has some work to do to be ready for the NHL level.

“I thought he had two strong games,” said Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli about Sauve. “He has stuff to work on, but gets away with stuff because of his speed or skill.”

Tyler Seguin had a bit of a rough night, but still was able to have two quality scoring chances. After getting two assists last night the Islanders figured out that they had to pay a little more attention to Seguin.

“They were keying in on him,” said Chiarelli.

Seguin still has to get used to the NHL style of play because it is a lot different than what he was playing at in the Ontario Hockey League last season.

“He’s getting the hang of it,” said Chiarelli. “I liked his battle a little bit more tonight.”

The Bruins are now opening training camp very soon. Chiarelli expects about five or six of the rookies that participated in the rookie games to be cut from the roster before then. The players that are cut will report back to their respective junior teams.
