Joao Sousa defeated Julien Benneteau 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 to win the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur. The championship was Sousa's first and was also the first ATP championship for a player from Portugal.

Sousa put together a monster run in the tournament defeating top seed and 4th ranked David Ferrer. He followed this up by eliminating Jurgen Melzer in the semifinals. Melzer recently won the Winston-Salem Open prior to the U.S. Open.

The 24 year old entered the tournament unseeded and 51st in the world.

Sousa dug himself a big hole and looked shaky, losing the first set to the Frenchman. But showed poise turning the match around, taking the next two sets. He was thrilled after the match, "I don't know what to say right now. It is unbelievable."

What is believable is that the Portuguese talent will likely crack the top 50 when the next rankings come out.
