Recently, watching the Miami Heat lose to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA Finals, really has me wondering how the Knicks will ever win an NBA Championship with the team they have.
Like the Heat, the Knicks have a no name bench. During the finals the Heat bench was outscored by the Mavericks bench. The Mavs have great depth coming off their bench, in which the Heat and Knicks don't.
For those of you that have been living under a rock, Amar'e Stoudemire signed with the Knicks last off season. Right before the trade deadline two other superstars in Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups came over to the Knicks via trade. Leaving the Knicks with 3 great players and a somewhat crappy bench.
Should the Knicks be scared?
Yes, the Knicks should be scared. In the first round of the playoffs, the Knicks bench did not step up after all three stars Anthony, Stoudemire and Billups were injured, losing to the Boston Celtics in 4 games. When Dirk Nowitzki was shooting poorly for the Mavericks, bench player, Jason Terry stepped up. The Knicks don't have that bench player who could step up and make big shots when their big names can't buy a bucket (Bill Walker, Toney Douglas).
The Knicks have no size as well. With scrub Jared Jeffries as their center, they will never win the championship. Tyson Chandler had a field day in the championship out playing Joel Anthony, which was expected. Jeffries would get killed in the post in the playoffs, with players playing much more competitive. If the Knicks added a guy like Chandler, they would be back to contenders, but for now, they are just another average team.
The Knicks for now, don't have a shot at making the finals, unless they add a player this year, like Fields, who can come in right away and be effective. Although, since Anthony came to the Knicks, Fields has played worse, and played less minutes. No, it's not a coincidence, Anthony does not fit well with Fields.
Toney Douglas and Bill Walker are good trade bait, so Knicks the Knicks should get a Center that can rebound and possibly put the ball in the net, because Jeffries cannot.
Bonzi Wells worked out for the Knicks, and reports say the Knicks were impressed. Wells was let go by the Hornets in 2008. Wells then played for Shanzi Zhongyu in the Chinese Basketball Association. His contract was terminated on February 2nd 2009. Moving from China to Puerto Rico, he played a full season with the Capitanes de Arecibo. Wells averaged .460 field goal percentage for his career in the NBA. He is also a three point threat, playing the shooting guard position. He can definitely help the Knicks, and would be a good player off the bench.
Other reports say that the Knicks and Pacers are talking about swapping their picks so the Knicks can get Jimmer Fredette.
Everyone is looking forward to the NBA Draft to see where the Knicks are headed, but right now, after watching the NBA Finals, it seems to me the Knicks don't have the pieces to win the championship.
