The Boston Celtics roster as it currently stands includes the names of fourteen players. NBA rules state that each team may have up to fifteen players on their roster, but only twelve of those players can be active. That brings up the question of whether or not the C's will add another player before the start of training camp.
Today a few rumors popped up around the web that the Celtics could possibly be pursuing 2010 first round draft pick Xavier Henry. Henry was the 12th pick in the NBA draft and is currently the only first round pick to have yet signed a contract.
Letting Henry go, for the right price, would make plenty of sense for the Grizzlies who are over-flooded with talented wing players like Rudy Gay, O.J Mayo, Tony Allen, and Sam Young. The question that arises for the Celtics is: How much should the C's give up for him? A draft pick, a draft pick + cash, or two draft picks + cash?
In my opinion, not knowing the way Henry's game will transfer to the NBA, a draft pick plus a little cash would be the best offer I'd make to Memphis. That would allow Memphis to have a first round pick in a future draft, and would give them some cash to go add another piece to their puzzle.
From a Celtics perspective Henry is definitely worth the risk of giving up a future pick. He's a freak of an athlete, he can add much needed youth to the squad, and he can add much needed depth on the wing.
Believe it or not, coming to the Celtics might even be in Henry's best interest. He would be coming to a winning team in need of a wing player to provide quality minutes off the bench.
Will Henry end up a Celtic? Probably not, but during a time when nothing's happening it's always fun to ponder things like this. Let us know what you would be willing to give up for Henry in the poll below.
