Earlier today, the Boston Celtics held their annual Shamrock Golf Tournament in Quincy, MA. In a post earlier, I highlighted the players there and one of the people that was missing was Shaq. Shaq was expected to arrive at the event at somepoint during the day; however, he arrived a little bit late and with a little bit of a twist.
Julian Benbow from The Boston Globe was at the event, and has the story:
So the crowd at the Granite Links Golf Club that had been waiting all afternoon for Shaquille O'Neal to show up sees a helicopter swoop in over the course and land near the driving range and immediately assume it's the 7-foot megastar.
They run across the parking lot with microphones, cameras and cellphones trying to get a shot.
Only it's not him. It's "just" some couple.
Some couple rich enough to avoid rush-hour traffic by hopping in the helicopter to have dinner at the Tavern.
O'Neal shows up shortly thereafter. How big was his entrance?
He pulls up driving a simple red van.
His first words?
"Got you with the old helicopter trick, huh?"
After all the waiting Shaq pretty much said what we expected him to say, which is strange for a guy who is known for saying the unexpected. He's been in Boston, he's excited for the season, he likes what the future looks like for the Celtics, and he has got to know Lawrence Frank a little bit better over the past few days. All this is good news... I guess. Let's just wait until the season starts, then we'll see what the big man is saying to the media.
