For those that dont' know (and I'm guessing it's a lot of you), today is a special day in the Jewish community. It is Shabbat Across America, so Judaism is running wild, brother!
What it is, is a chance for Jews around the country to unify for one night and day to "do Jewish". Most synagogues and local communities do special services and dinners for the event, so if you are looking for community and free food, I suggest finding a temple near you tonight!
While I do that, I also want to do my part to promote it on the site. I've probably only mentioned my Jewish heritage a couple of times, but today just feels like the right time to embrace it.
I'm sure you are wondering "well how does this relate to wrestling?" Glad you asked!
Wrestling over the years has had a number of Jewish wrestlers, from the Poffo brothers (Macho Man Randy Savage and Leapin' Lanny aka The Genius) to Raven, Goldberg, the Nasty Boys, and others. The squared circle has long been a place called home by Jews, though no one embraced their roots more than Barry Horowitz. The longtime jobber used his Judaism as a gimmick and actually gained popularity through it. His antics led to him being one of the few jobbers to get a legit pushing, even winning a few Pay Per View matches in the mid 90s.
Today, we honor Barry Horowitz for his contributions. Sure, some might see his theme song and antics as a mockery, but I applaud Mr. Horowitz for exposing Judaism to the wrestling world. I leave you with his theme. Enjoy at your own discretion and have a wonderful Shabbat Across America!
