At 79, Ron Fimrite, The Chronicle's legendary "Sporting Tiger" columnist and retired senior writer for Sports Illustrated, is still pounding away at his 1949 Royal. The latest work to come out of his overstuffed home office in Presidio Heights is "Golden Bears: A Celebration of Cal Football's Triumphs, Heartbreaks, Last-Second Miracles, Legendary Blunders and the Extraordinary People Who Made It All Possible," released late last month. Q: Why 517 pages on Cal football? A: Because it is a book about social history and about Bay Area history. My intention was to meld the sporting culture into the general culture.
