NFL Preseason Preview: Weeden Ready For Live Action Versus Lions

By SBRForum.com

The Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns are ready to welcome the 2012 preseason as both teams will be making their debuts on Friday night. While the Lions were a playoff team last year and have little to prove, the Browns should be exerting much more effort in the contest as their roster is chalk-full of young players with the franchise in full-on rebuilding mode.

All eyes will be on Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden as he will see his first live NFL action on Friday night when he gets under center against the Lions. Weeden is one of two Browns first-round picks in the 2012 NFL Draft and the coaching staff has already anointed him the starting quarterback in favor of last year’s starter Colt McCoy.

The preseason is very important to the Browns, who are trying to find the right foundational pieces – yet again. They continue to have high draft picks since the team has been so bad over the last decade but they’ve had far too few hits and way too many misses.

Overall, it’s been a bad week for Cleveland as supposed top cornerback and 2011 first-round pick, Joe Haden, failed a drug test and could be facing a four-game suspension. Also, running back Trent Richardson, the Browns other first-round pick this season, is going to have surgery to have his knee scoped. The team is hoping he’ll be ready for the regular season opener.

Even so, the Browns are favored on the NFL odds because these types of preseason games mean more to them. They have plenty of roster competitions going on whereas the Lions are pretty much set in stone in most places. The Lions just need to stay healthy while the Browns need to see if Weeden – and others – are truly the future of the franchise.
