Sam Hornish Jr won his first career Nationwide Series race in the Wypall 200 at the newly reconfigured Phoenix International Raceway. Hornish led a total of 62 laps en route to the win. He held off a hard charging Brad Keselowski for the final 19 laps. Hornish Jr, a multi-time Indianapolis 500 winner made his NASCAR debut in 2006 at Phoenix.
Championship contender Elliott Sadler had his championship hopes go up in smoke when he was wrecked by Jason Leffler entering turn three with under 30 laps to go. Sadler went three-wide underneath Leffler and Aric Almirola through the new dogleg. Sadler went way below the usual racing surface and when he came back up onto the track he was bumped by Leffler entering the turn. Sadler, Leffler and Almirola were all involved as well as Morgan Shepherd among others. Leffler's whole fuel cell was knocked out of the car when Shepherd made contact with him. Leffler took all the blame for the wreck afterwards.
Championship leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr finished fifth after leading a race-high 72 laps. Due to Sadler's troubles, Stenhouse extended his points lead to 41 points.
Almirola started on the pole and ran up front for much of the race leading a total of 66 laps. His race was derailed when his team dropped a lugnut on his last pit stop which put him to mid-pack. As a result he was deep in the field when Leffler and Sadler made contact. Almirola finished in 25th, 26 laps down.
