New York, NY - Revenge was sweet for many members of the Blue Brand on this week Friday night’s SmackDown, as the buildup to WrestleMania continues for the members of the WWE Universe.
Rey Mysterio def. Kane: In what was a huge roll up victory for the Master of the 6-1-9 over Kane. This match did nothing more than to set the stage for our first WWE Superstar gaining revenge as Cody Rhodes would return to heel form on this night.
The members of the WWE Creative team would set up the stage for the ‘Dashing One’s’ revenge perfectly as it would seem as if the young lion would have to apologize to Mysterio who is a friend of the Rhodes family. Things would begin with ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes coming down and making things seem as if his son was in the wrong.
Cue in a very well cut promo by Dusty who is one of the top talkers in the business. Saying how his son got caught up with things and lost his focus on the big picture. Now it is time for Cody to apologize to Rey, but before the warm fuzzy feeling could continue we would cue in the sneak attack.
As Mysterio and Dusty shook hands, Dusty held Rey long enough to allow his son to attack from behind. It was a viscous attack from the ‘Dashing One’ who now wears a plastic mask on his face, due to the ‘supposed’ broken nose that he is suffering. Eventually Cody would take Rey to the outside of the ring and continue the attack. Rhodes would ending the by throwing the masked wonder into the video portion of the video tron, before ripping off the mask of the luchador and holding it high in the air.
The segment would continue with the father and son duo celebrating backstage with the young lion having an iron grip on Mysterio’s mask. Hopefully this feud with Mysterio will be what Cody needs to push him to the top of the Blue Brand. Ever since he and ‘Priceless’ partner Ted DiBiase broke up neither have been able to find the success they were looking for; this just maybe the break for Rhodes though if done properly.
Rosa Mendes def. Layla: So it seems as if the duo diva team of Laycool maybe finally breaking up. This match only served as a buildup to that breakup, and for this one journalist it is about time that these two part ways. Both Layla and partner Michelle McCool have dominated the Blue Brand long enough.
Both Divas have improved so much not only in promo skills, but in their move set and hopefully a feud between the two along with a separation period will be what the other needs. For sure it is something that the struggling women’s division in the WWE needs to get people interested in women’s wrestling again. Hopefully we will get a chance to see these two friends go at it in a classic bout at Mania this year.
Jack Swagger def. Kofi Kingston: The All-American American was able to pick up the victory with the ankle lock as Kingston had to tap out to the submission move. It was a short bout between these two superstars, who have had epic confrontations in the past.
Sadly this bout did not do much for either superstar nor did it build any momentum towards Mania. It was just a filler match, while showing the desperate need for a veteran guy on the Blue Brand. Either that or it would be nice with the superstars now freely going to the other brand for Swagger to go to Raw and set something up with fellow submission specialist Daniel Bryan. WWE needs to do something with both Kingston and Swagger as these two superstars can be vital members to a very bright future for either brand.
The members of the WWE Universe watching the show at home got to see the recap of John Cena's freestyle from this past Monday night as a response to The Rock ripping him two weeks ago. Personally I was surprised that WWE allowing the whole Cena response to air on SmackDown, as they could have used that time to build up more feuds with Mania right around the corner. The sad/funny thing about the comments that Cena made is about the Rock leaving to make movies.
Well isn’t that something that Cena himself has done, if the ’Chain gang’ leader had any success with his films do you really think he himself would be in the ‘E’ right about now? Next time Cena try to choose your words better before ripping into someone.
Guys like Cena, The Miz and many-many others should be grateful that a guy like The Rock decided to take a leave from the company. Who knows how differently things would look right now if many of the Vets didn’t step down to allow these younger guys to shine.
Getting back to SmackDown this was the part of the show that builds up to the Main Event and the possible firing of Vickie Guerrero from the Blue Brand. Guerrero is slated to have a mixed-tag bout later in the night. Guerrero would have to tag with Drew McIntyre to fight Edge and newly hired Kelly Kelly in a battle to save her job. The stipulations were simple for the bout later on- win and Vickie stays, lose and no more ‘Excuse Me’ on Friday nights. Fans would have to watch a segment backstage of Vickie begging with nephew Chavo for assistance in her bout, but her nephew would have no part saying ‘payback is a witch’ to one of the top witches of the WWE.
Big Show def. Wade Barrett: Even though The Big Show was able to get the one-on-one victory over Barrett the feud between these two and the heel group called ‘The Corre’ is not yet over. The Blue Brands version of the Nexus was going to come down and attack Show, but the ‘Worlds Largest Athlete’ was able to grab a steel chair and chase them out of the arena.
Again this bout didn’t really do anything for these two superstars personally. It would have been nice to see Barrett to get a victory over the Show eventually, but I am more hoping for a one-on-one contest between Zeke and Show down the road. Considering WWE Creative granted me one bout with Sheamus and Mark Henry I may not get another for a while so.
The show then cuts to the encounter of Undertaker and Hunter this past Monday; this one journalist would like to correct the streak of Taker which currently stands at 18-0. I know many will disagree with me when I say this, but the streak for Taker ends this year. Hunter has too much of an ego, and wants to end his career on a high note and there is no better way of going out then by ending Takers’ streak.
Finally we get our second dish of revenge as Edge and Kelly Kelly defeated the duo of Drew McIntyre and Vickie Guerrero. The end would start with the ‘Rated-R’ superstar about to dish out the Spear on the ‘Chosen One.’ Remember folks with this move Vickie would lose her job.
Before the finishing move can be applied Guerrero comes into the ring and starts to plead with her ex-’husband’ to walk away from the situation, but a spear from newly hired Kelly Kelly would get Guerrero out of the way. The ‘Ultimate Opportunist’ would then spear McIntyre to get rid of the evil Vickie for good.
In spite of much begging and pleading by Guerrero to gain her job back, it would help to kill enough time for the ‘Mexican Aristocrat’ Alberto Del Rio to attack his WrestleMania opponent from behind. WWE’s hottest heel would throw Edge into the steel ring post before applying the cross arm breaker. Del Rio would break the submission move, exiting with his dimpled smile and wink ending the show having taking his destiny into his own hands.
It should be interesting to see if the members of the WWE Creative will allow Del Rio to see this whole destiny storyline to go through to the end, and allow the hottest heel in the company to gain a victory at the biggest pay-per-view of the year. This victory would send the company in a new direction, and hopefully open the door for other young lions for more opportunities at the strap. But you-you already knew that!!
