It appears that Valtteri Filppula will become an unrestricted free agent on July 5. The Red Wings already have 14 forwards under contract and still want to sign Damien Brunner to a contract so Filppula is likely headed towards free agency. The Red Wings do not want to pay him $5 million annually but there is likely some NHL team that is looking for a top-two center. Filppula was outstanding offensively in 2011-12 with 23 goals and 66 points but struggled in 2013 with only nine goals and 17 points in 41 games. There are not a lot of centers available in free agency so Filppula could find himself with some suitors during free agent frenzy.
