Red Sox make claim on Tigers' Damon

Johnny Damon could be heading back to Boston. The Red Sox put a waiver claim in on Damon yesterday afternoon. Damon left Boston after the 2005 season to go to the New York Yankees. He has not been well received in Boston since leaving. In his return to Boston with the New York Yankees, fans threw money at Damon while he played the outfield.

Damon was a part of the 2004 Red Sox World Series team that broke the 86 year old curse. There are not many players left from the Cow Boy Up era, so maybe its time to bring one back?

Now in 2010 with about six weeks left Johnny Damon has a chance to come back to Boston, and win the hearts back of the Boston faithful. No one can blame Damon for taking a bigger contract because the Red Sox were offering a lot less. What hurt fans was the team he went to was the the hated rival New York Yankees.

Damon has a no trade list though, so he basically decides whether or not he goes to Boston because the Red Sox are on his list.

Red Sox players would love to have Damon back “I am going to call him right now,” said Red Sox DH David Ortiz.

Jason Varitek also described Damon as a good teammate and and player. Damon’s former Red Sox teammates might need to do some convincing to get Damon to come back.

“My gut and everything and everything else tells me Detroit is the place for me,” said Damon.

Damon has 48 hours to approve going to the Red Sox. There are probably a few reasons the Red Sox put in the claim.

  1. The Red Sox are not completely out of it, so he can help during the last 6 weeks. He would probably face righties and play LF while Bill Hall could see the bulk of playing time vs lefties.
  2. Hey this could very well just be a PR stunt. The Red Sox want to sell tickets, and TV ratings have been down. Brining in a former fan favorite could jolt some interest in the team. Especially if the Red Sox can close the playoff gap.
  3. Stop him from heading to Tampa Bay or New York. The Yankees or Rays would love to get their hands on Damon who could really help their ball clubs.
