The Boston Red Sox acquired Texas catcher Jarrod Saltalmacchia for 2 minor leaguers, and a player to be named later or cash considerations.
Saltalmacchia was once regarded as one of the top catching prospects in Major League Baseball. Saltalmacchia has stuggled though and has spent most of this season in AAA.
Saltalmacchia will join the Pawtucket Red Sox for now. Expect him to be called up very soon to the big club. Kevin Cash will probably lose his roster spot to the once highly touted Saltalmacchia.
Saltalmacchia is still only 25 though so he still has time to develop into a starting catcher. If anything the trade gives the Red Sox insurance incase Victor Martinez is not re-signed.
The Red Sox have always been very high on Saltalmacchia, so it is no surprise that the sox went after Saltalmacchia.
The Red Sox also sent Ramon Ramirez to the San Francisco Giants for minor league pitcher Dan Turpen.
