#12 Ole Miss (14-3) hosts SEC foe Auburn (10-7) this weekend for a three game SEC set, starting at 6:30pm tonight, Swayze Field, Oxford, MS.
Ole Miss is seeing softballs at the plate right now, and are looking to continue the high octane offense they have enjoyed of late.
Auburn will try to slow down the Reb’s attack with experienced Senior right-hander Derek Varnadore. On the back side of the series, Auburn, will throw Sophmore, Will Kendall and Freshman, Daniel Koger on Saturday and Sunday.
The youngsters have forced their way into the starting rotation by throwing lights out ball, combining for 4 earned runs so far in the young season.
The Auburn trio will face a strong test this weekend in Oxford. Ole Miss has the second highest team batting average in the SEC at 334, 3rd in runs scored (146), and 4th in homeruns (15).
The Rebel’s offense is led by Jr infielder, Alex Yarbrough with a 459 batting average and Sr outfielder Zach Kirksey who has 8hr and 30 RBI, despite not being a full time starter. There may not be enough bats to go around this year.
Ole Miss’ weekend pitching rotation has been solid in preseason with Bobby Wahl, R.J Hively and Mike Mayers. Despite high expectations and low ERA’s, none of them have started an SEC game. Bobby Wahl is coming off SEC Pitcher of the Week honors after a two hit shutout of UNC-Wilmington, striking out 9 in 7 innings.
This shapes up to be a good matchup, as both pitching staffs are young and the teams really hit the ball. Hopefully home field advantage will be too much for the Tigers of Auburn. Follow me on twitter at @aceyrob
