Rangers Drop Pre-Season Opener 2-1 to Devils
The Rangers pre-season opener in Albany ended in a 2-1 loss, as Patrik Elias scored 45 seconds into the OT session.
Although the Rangers lost, there were plenty of bright spots at both ends of the ice. The biggest story for the Rangers was in net. Henrik Lundqvist played 31:13, and made 18 saves on 19 shots. The only puck to get by him came off the stick of ex-Ranger Petr Sykora, who signed a tryout contract with the Devils prior to training camp. Sykora received a pass from Devils' first-round draft pick Adam Larsson, and fired a wrist shot past Lundqvist's blocker at 11:34 of the first period.
The biggest surprise of the night was Lundqvist's replacement, Cam Talbot. After entering the game, Talbot made many spectacular saves to keep the Rangers' deficit to 1, including back to back saves against Sykora halfway through the 3rd period.
Talbot's play allowed the Rangers to tie the game, as Dale Weise took an Artem Anisimov pass and fired a shot past Devils goalie Jeff Frazee with 4:11 remaining in the 3rd period.
The two teams will meet again Friday night at the Prudential Center in Newark.
