Somtimes you look at Rajon Rondo's game and you ask, "Ya know.. Wouldn't it be better if every once in a while he accepted his wide open layup instead of always looking to get his teammates involved?" I know I am not the only one who sees that. You just WISH he would take that wide open layup.
BUT, after games like he had against the New York Knicks, how can we complain? By complaining about that, its just like complaining when the Celtics as a team pass too much. We sit there and say, "STOP MAKING TOO MANY PASSES!!" However, the very next possession, that same unselfishness will lead to an awesome basket. So eventually we have to end up understanding that it is better to have an extremely unselfish team, than it is a team filled with players who always want to take the shot.
This is the same thought process with what Rondo does. You have to accept the times when he doesn't take the open layup, because in the end it leads to games like tonight, which leads to a much better Boston Celtics team.
Rondo had 24 assists. Lets just assume (although it has to be false) that every one of those assists were for a 2 point basket. That is 58 points Rondo directly had a hand in (24*2= 48 + 10 points he had). In a 105 point team effort, that is 55% of the teams scoring that was because of Rondo's ability to see the floor. And remember, that is a bare minimum. That does not include 3 point shots he could have had an assist for, or and 1's that were a result of his passes.
That is crazy. This is why the Celtics are such a threat in the playoffs. There is no one in the league who can match up to this guy. He makes average players look great, and great players make him look even better. And THAT is why this team contends when healthy.
