Just as the NFL honors the survivors and the on-going fight against breast cancer, NASCAR is doing their part this upcoming race weekend.
At both the Charlotte Motor Speedway and the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, NASCAR teams, drivers and officials will "go pink" to increase awareness for the cause as well as raise funding for research. All Sprint Cup, Nationwide, and Camping World Truck Series will be running a special NASCAR logo on the A-post for the duration of the weekend.
Some teams will also be running pink accents or special pink paint schemes for the weekend. In the Nationwide Series, Turner Motorsports No. 32 Dollar General Chevrolet driven by Brian Vickers, plus the No. 2 Kevin Harvick Inc. Chevrolet of Elliott Sadler, each will be running specialty accents.
David Reutimann is running a full pink paint scheme on his No. 00 Aaron's Dream Machine Toyota in the Sprint Cup Series to go along with the campaign.
Along with the logos on all the NASCAR competing vehicles, NASCAR officials will have on pink lanyards all weekend along with the NASCAR Breast Cancer Awareness patches on their uniforms.
Mechanix Gloves, the official glove of NASCAR, is supplying pink gloves that will be signed by drivers and then auctioned off on the NASCAR Unites website. There will be many teams wearing the gloves throughout the weekend as well, as the ongoing campaign to make people aware of the cause and research.
"Breast Cancer Awareness month is one of those unique opportunities in which the NASCAR industry and NASCAR fans rally together for such a special and important cause," said Sandy Marshall, executive director of The NASCAR Foundation. "Each year the program gets bigger, which means that awareness is growing across the board."
The main event of the weekend will take place during Friday night's NASCAR Nationwide Series race. The Dollar General 300 Miles of Courage will be having a pink theme, as NASCAR is encouraging all fans attending the race to wear pink.
It is considered to be a "Pink Out" at the race track, as all tickets, the frontstretch grass and the start/finish line will all incorporate the pink color.
Dollar General employees effected by breast cancer in some way will be dignitaries for the race, and serving as the Honorary Race Director is Nanny Sue Neal, the oldest living survivor of the disease in North Carolina, at 101-years-old.
A group of 300 survivors will be honored in a special "Ring of Survivors" during pre-race ceremonies.
Breast Cancer Awareness has been a month-long initiative in NASCAR, as beginning at Dover teams ran either a special pink paint scheme or numbering.
The Richard Childress cars of Paul Menard, Clint Bowyer and Jeff Burton all ran special pink numbers and Chevrolet logos, as did Regan Smith, Juan Pablo Montoya and Tony Stewart.
Kevin Harvick ran a special Rheem "Chasing the Cure" paint scheme in that race.
