Phils win 9-1, Hamels has Back Stiffness
If what happened in the 8th inning tonight didn't occur, I wouldn't even be typing up the recap of tonight's game. But Cole Hamels in the 8th inning suffered back stiffness and had to come out of the game. Now before we jump to conclusions or anything like that, let's take a look at the weather for tonight's game. It rained before the start delaying the game and it was a cold night in South Philly, what I think, and hope, is that the cold was the main reason for the injury. No word has been given yet on if Hamels will make his next start, but I assume we'll find out soon. Personally I don't understand why he was even in the game at that point, yes we have a double header tommorow and you might need the bullpen a lot tommorow, but with how good Cole is right now, you don't take ANY risks with this guy, NONE.
Now to the ballgame, Cole allowed an early first inning run but in the bottom of the first Ryan Howard picked up another dinger and this one the other way to give the Phils a 2-1 lead. Then in the bottom of the 3rd, Chase Utley rocketed one into deep right to give the Phils a 4-1 lead. The homers kept coming as Domonic Brown got his 3rd of 2011, this time a solo shot. J-Roll also picked up another homer as he added to the run scoring. D-Brown got his second of the game which he put into the second deck at CBP and it was his first career 2 homerun game. As for Cole, well what can you say about him except wow. Cole was flat out dominant tonight and his signature changeup was absolutely filthy. Hamels picked up his 9th win of the season and is really coming into his own this season as one of the best pitchers in the game.
Now while it is yet to be seen exactly how serious this injury is for Cole, the concern level shouldn't be high right now. So everybody just chill, relax, the offense is doing great right now (knock on wood) and the pitching staff is at it's best this year. So it's gonna be ok for now, let's just wait and see over the next few days what the word is on Cole and if it's anything serious which I doubt. The Phils picked up win number 41 tonight and with the Fish fading fast, it looks like another Braves vs Phillies division battle late in the year should the pace stay the same. The Phils have a 3.5 game lead over Atlanta with the Mets beating them tonight.
Tommorow we have double header baseball, Kyle Kendrick will get the start for game 1 and Doc Halladay for game 2. Basically what this means is, Doc better be on his game for game 2, and the offense better be clicking in game 1. LET'S GO PHILS!
