You gotta love a team that has as much fight in it as the Phils. Coming back from what basically looked like a lock for a sweep, Philadelphia was able to win it 7-6 in eleven innings.
What a mixed bag by the pitching, especially Cole Hamels. He gave up 4 earned runs in six innings and saw his ERA rise to 5.28. He allowed 9 hits and 4 walks yet struck out 10. What do make of this guy? He again struggled to strand runners in the big spot when the bases were loaded. I'm hoping that he can build up on this start but how long can we go on saying that? 10 k's are great but 13 baserunners in 6 innings? A WHIP of over 2 is going to get you killed any day. Ryan Madson picked up his first win of the season while also collecting his second blow save. The Mad Dog should have been able to close this one out but instead got a victory for blowing it. Nelson Figueroa then got his first save of the year while allowing a run and was a play at the plate away from blowing it.
At the plate, it probably felt great for the Big Piece to get his first long ball since signing his new deal. Howard was 2 for 4 (.286 on the year) and launched home run number 4 while collecting RBI number 17. But lets look at the real hero: Jayson Werth. A bases loaded double that cleared the bases off of Giants closer Brian Wilson to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. I soon received texts along the lines of "we cannot let this guy walk" and I happen to agree.
The Phillies will get the day off tomorrow and then start a 3 game set when Kyle Kendrick will take on Jonathan Niese and the Mets at 7:05 (I will be in attendance). The Mets currently sit in first by half a game over the Phillies.
