Today, the man that defines the Boston Celtics during my generation had his high school jersey retired. No longer will anybody at Inglewood High School in Inglewood, CA wear the #34 on their backs. That number belongs to "The mother (expletive) Truth."
Mark Medina, a past guest on The Celtics Late Night Show, was at Inglewood High School today for the historic occasion.
Pierce, a former standout at Inglewood High, was having his No. 34 jersey retired at the school. You'd think that might bring up conflicted feelings, because, you know, the Lakers beat the Celtics in the 2010 Finals.
But Pierce said: "I don't have conflicted memories. I live here. I'm from here. I'm around my friends and my family. Obviously losing to the Lakers in Game 7 hurts, but it's just home for me in the offseason. I spend a lot of time around people that had a chance to watch Paul Pierce grow and had a chance to watch Paul Pierce succeed in high school, college and the NBA."
Now there is only one uniform left that Paul Pierce has suited up in that has yet to be retired. Trust me, that day will come when #34 is retired for Inglewood High, Kansas University, and the Boston Celtics. Paul Pierce is forever a Celtic, and he will have his jersey retired once he decides to call it quits in the NBA.
