Serious injuries in sports are not something you want to mess around with. Many times players come back from injuries too soon and end up hurting them in the long run. Celtics center Kendrick Perkins doesn't want that to happen but at the same time he wants to get back on the court.
When asked by Gary Tanguay in an interview on CSNNE tonight about his return date Perkins notified Tanguay that a return in the beginning of March would be too late. How about a return in late February, Perk? Too late. Mid-February? Too late.
As of right now, Perk is sold on the fact that he will be returning during the early part of the month of February.
One reason for his motivation may surprise you. It isn't his teammate Kevin Garnett who recovered from a knee injury last season. It's a player in a completely different sport. It's the New England Patriots Wes Welker, who suffered a tough blow at the end of last season when he went down with an ACL/MCL injury to his left knee.
At that time many thought Welker might not even be able to play in 2010. Some thought he might it back by late October. Almost everybody didn't expect him to participate in training camp... and he did.
Perkins credits Welkers faster than expected return because of his tough mental edge. "I watched the game last night. I got a different type of motivation just watching him play yesterday with no knee brace, nothing." Perk also goes onto say that not only is he a Patriots fan, he is now also a big Wes Welker fan.
It just happens to be a coincidence that Wes is also a big Celtics fan. I wonder if Perk would still be a big fan of Wes if he was a Lakers fan? Probably not.
