Wait, what? Brett Favre, 3-time MVP and longtime Packers quarterback is mum on retirement? No, it can't be.
Brett Favre, who has seemingly retired every summer since 2002, has been stereotypically quiet about his offseason plans leading everyone to believe a 2010 return is imminent for Favre. Favre recently underwent surgery to repair his ankle and remove bone spurs that appears to point toward a return for the quarterback. If Favre returns, which I think he will, it will be his 20th NFL season and would push his consecutive starts streak to 301 games if he starts all 16 games for the Vikings. The return would be a big boost for the Vikings who chose not to draft Jimmy Clausen or Colt McCoy even though they had a chance to and have left their quarterback position hanging in the hands of Favre.
What would Favre's return mean for the Packers?
I believe that Favre's return could only mean positive things for the Packers even though they lost twice to the Vikings last season. The Vikings lost a key cog in their offense with the departure to Chester Taylor and the Packers bulked up their offensive line with the selection of Bryan Bulaga. The Packers biggest problem against the Vikings in 2009 was protecting Aaron Rodgers against Jared Allen and the formidable Vikings pass rush. However, I think a possible Favre return would do nothing more than excite the Packers for two more games against their old quarterback.
The Packers are one more year into a 3-4 defense that saw them lead the NFL in takeaways and produce a game-breaking outside tackle in Clay Matthews. Matthews led the Packers with 10.5 sacks in 2009. The Packers also stocked up on their defensive line depth and one more year for 2009 first round pick B.J. Raji brings even more optimism for this defensive front.
I believe the Packers would love two more shots at Favre's Vikings (yes, they are still Favre's since he hasn't "officially" retired and can do whatever he wants). I would think this year might bring different results for the 2010 Pack.
