The Green Bay Packers begin their 2010 season with a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field this evening. The Packers also faced the Browns during last preseason, winning 17-0 at home in their first preseason game last season.
However, this year the Packers have higher hopes for the end of the season, with Mike McCarthy preaching to target the Super Bowl.
The Packers will closely be watching many competitions in game action, along with rookie and free-agent acquisitions. Some of the players that will closely be watched include 1st round rookie Bryan Bulaga, rookie safety Morgan Burnett (a candidate to replace Bigby if Bigby cannot start the season), along with the outside linebackers, the defensive line, the offensive line, and the punting competition.
The Packers boast one of the best offenses in the NFL and will return all 11 starters from a year ago. Rodgers is closing in on joining an elite group of quarterbacks with his numbers, and the Packers will look for another big year from Jermichael Finley, one of the top young talents at tight end.
The Packers offense has been in the top-10 in each of the past 10 years under McCarthy's tutelage. The only other team to accomplish that is the 2009 Super Bowl Champion New Orlean Saints. Could the Packers follow their fate with a potent offense and a defense that thrives on turnovers.
Dom Capers' 3-4 scheme returns in its second season that saw the Packers jump to No. 2 overall defensive ranking and No. 1 ranking against the run. The Pack finished No. 20 and 26 respectively in those categories the previous year. The Packers also led the league in interceptions.
