As the President of the United States signed a bill today changing healthcare for at least the next three years, the NFL owners also passed a rule change of their own that might incite more arguments and anger than the healthcare bill.
The NFL owners approved a change to playoff overtime rules 28-4 today. The change that was voted through could possibly be the most retarded ever adopted by the league.
The new rule states that a field goal on the first possession of overtime can no longer end a game. If the team that receives the kickoff kicks a field goal they will have to kick back to their opponents to give them a chance to equal or better them, but if that initial receiving team scores a touchdown on that first possesion the game is over.
If the score is tied after both teams have had a possession (if nobody scores or field goals were equaled) then the regular sudden death rules will now apply.
Really, was the old rule that bad to throw so much confusion into a "GAME!" If you don't want to lose if you lose the coin toss then play some damn defense or block the field goal. DO SOMETHING other than whine that your offense didn't get a shot on the field. Nothing in life is guarenteed so why should a possession in football overtime be.
The rule is ridiculous and add that to all the additional safety rules being implemented every year the league is taking NFL football away from us. At this rate even 190 pound weaklings like myself will be able to play professional football, because all the athletics, skill and pain will be removed, but you'll need a doctoral degree to figure out the overtime rules. Soon all players will be wrapped in Charmin, playing two hand touch with an overtime tire toss off to determine the winner if necessary.
