Last night I had a 1,000 word piece explaining why I thought the NHL postseason was better then the NBA postseason. My argument was logical and touched on many points. I may post it sometime in the near future but the Boston Bruins just made a far better argument then I ever can.
The Bruins winning Game 4 in sudden death double overtime at home to take a 3-1 series lead over the Buffalo Sabres says it all. You don’t get games that match that kind of intensity from start to finish in the NBA.
From the moment they dropped the puck, the noise level at the Garden was deafening. Despite falling behind 2-0 through two periods, the home crowd never waived, picking up the intensity with every moment that went by.
When the game reached overtime, they went the first 12 minutes without a stoppage in play. Take a second to re-read that last sentence and think about how many breaks there are in a single five minute overtime session in the NBA.
Add to that the fact that the NHL is Sudden Death in overtime. A single break in concentration, a single breakdown and the game is over. Both teams had numerous scoring chances and everyone watching was on edge.
While you occasionally get a game that is close to that exciting in the NBA, (see Celtics/Bulls series last year), the craziness didn’t start until the fourth quarter which is also when the crowd started reaching its peak.
Any argument about the better postseason ended last night in Boston and I dare anyone to try and argue otherwise.
