Plaxico Burress will be released from prison and has already been drawing interest from many teams. ESPN NFL Rumors Insider says the following teams that have possibly shown interest are the Cincinnati Bengals, St. Louis Rams, New York Jets, New York Giants, New England Patriots, and the Baltimore Ravens.
But could the Colts be a dark horse for the former star wide receiver? Burress was recently sentenced to prison after a gun-shot wound in the leg at a club.
Many former Giants have said that Burress is better than ever and is fully healthy and in-shape. He is more fit and athletic than we have last seen him. Burress is also not banged as he was when he last played.
But would the Colts need him? Indianapolis has been known not to target troubled players. But we have seen how Michael Vick has done as a former player from prison, and boy, he was better than ever. Burress might as well be a changed man, too.
With this, the Colts could use Burress. Jim Irsay and Bill Polian have already noted to explore more into free agency. First things first, though, Indianapolis may be starting off to invest in the offensive line and then the defense.
Right now, the wide receiver position isn't a big need. Other rumors are indicating that the Colts may acquire Larry Fitzgerald. This would be huge and Indianapolis could really become a legit contender with just this simple deal. And if Burress is as good as advertised so far, that could be just as good.
Face it, I'd rather have a Fitzgerald or a much-more-improved Burress on the opposite side of Reggie Wayne on the field than Pierre Garcon or Austin Collie. The Colts, who are known to be a pass-happy offense, could use four-receiver sets more often. No five since Indianapolis got Dallas Clark down there.
But it would look intimidating with these offensive guys on offense in a four-receiver set:
- Peyton Manning
- Reggie Wayne
- Plaxico Burress or Larry Fitzgerald
- Austin Collie
- Pierre Garcon
- Dallas Clark
With a normal two-or-three receiver set, Indianapolis can look more intimidating in the run-game. They were simply awesome in the run game in the last few weeks of the season since they started to carry the ball more.
But with one more elite receiver, it could totally change the complexion of the run game.
Indianapolis should consider it at least. They've already been rumored to target Fitzgerald. Targeting Burress may not be as bad either.
