It has been a while since Carl Edwards last visited victory lane. In fact the last time was in 2008 at Homestead. After a close title battle with Jimmie Johnson; Johnson won the title in Miami-Homestead and Edwards won the race.
A few weeks prior Edwards swept the Texas Motor Speedway races in 2008 in route to his runner up finish in the title hunt.
Since then it has been a struggle to say the least. Roush Fenway Racing in the last two seasons has been a step behind its competitors. Even though Edwards has made the Chase the last two seasons he hasn’t been a factor in the title.
This season sitting sixth in the standings Edwards is still searching for his first win of the season. After a slow start this season Edwards and his team hit their stride in August.
Coming into this weekend race at TMS, Edwards is looking forward to the race and his chances of finding victory lane.
"We've had great success at Texas and I love racing there. It's a great place to race and a great place to win. At this point in the season we've got three races left to finish strong and Texas is one we feel like we have an opportunity to go get a win so this race couldn't come at a better time."
He should be looking forward to TMS this weekend, his three wins there is a series best. Edwards also ranks second with 476 laps led in the last 11 races. He also has three top fives and four top 10 finishes.
Edwards could finish off the year very strong in the next three races, as he has had success in all three tracks.
The goal for the drivers not in the title hunt is to finish in the top five in the standings. Edwards is only 17 points out of the top five and 40 points out of the top four.
A win this weekend could very well accomplish moving up in the standings but would be a confidence boost for the team.
Edwards and his team know that it all begins on Friday and qualifying well. In the last five races he has twice qualified in the top 10.
The results have been a mixed bag for him he has one win when he started second in 2008. Last fall after starting sixth he was involved in a wreck and he finished 39th.
Edwards carries a lot of confidence when he comes to Texas and don’t be surprised if you see him shooting off the pistols on Sunday.
“If you win you get a cowboy hat and two pistols so it doesn't get much better than that.”
