A couple of days ago MLBTR.com ran this story: Daniel Murphy: What Position?
The article by Howard Megdal opens with the following line: “No one really disputes the fact that the Mets will be looking to trade Daniel Murphy. It is a team with weaknesses, while the one position where Murphy has excelled so far, first base, now appears to be the province of Ike Davis.”
So it appears the Mets have 3 options with Murphy.
- Allow him to further develop in the minors learning to play 2B as a possible replacement for Castillo.
- Send him to the minors to learn to be a utility bench player. I like this option but I wonder if Murphy is potentially worth more than this and if he is actually capable of playing passable defense at multiple positions.
- Trade him.
All three options have their merit and other variables will likely determine the Mets course of action.
Assuming that Megdal is correct and the Mets are looking to trade Murphy, what kind of value can we expect in return? What teams would be looking for a guy with Murphy’s “skill sets” (yes I just went there)?
I really don’t have any concrete evidence of any likely landing spots so I will save my guesses for the comment section. Feel free to throw your own ideas in as well.
