Mortal Kombat! Saul Alvarez vs Ismayl Sillakh

Ismayl

This is a new feature I will be doing from time to time after two prospects fight on the same weekend or in a very close time frame.

This weekend we saw Ismayl Sillakh fight on Friday Night Fights and last night we saw Saul Alvarez fight in the H.B.O. main event.

They are both young talented fighters that seem to have a bright future. Alvarez is clearly the more celebrated of the two and can call himself a titlist after last night.

Sillakh on the other hand is looking to fight for a title at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. Lets dive in and take a look at which fighter will have the better career.

Sillakh

Who is he?

Sillakh is a light heavyweight from the Ukraine who had a ton of amateur fights and went 302-16 in those fights.

He was the European and World Champion in 2001, world silver medal winner in 2005, and the 2006 European silver medalist. He turned pro in on July 18, 2008 and is 15-0 (12 KO).

What has he done?

He had a great amateur career but what has he done in the pros? He is still fighting gatekeepers but is moving along at a good pace.

His best wins are a TKO-2 over durable veteran Daniel Judah, UD-10 over another veteran Rayco Saunders, and a UD-10 over Yordanis Despaigne to win the NABF light heavyweight title.

His win over Despaigne is probably his best as he was an accomplished amateur himself and was 8-0 (4 KO) coming into the fight.

Pros: He is already a finished prodcut at 26 and is silky smooth in the ring. He has good speed for a light heavyweight and above average power.

He also does a good job of mixing his punches and changes speed well as he showed in his knockdown of Despaigne.

He is so relaxed in the ring and has good wheels. He isn't a runner but he moves around the ring very well.

Cons: There aren't many but he doesn't seem to be a good finisher as he had Despaigne hurt badly but didn't go in for the kill.

He was also lunging and his head was open for an uppercut all night.

Saul Alvarez

Who is he?

The next great Mexican fighter who already has a title around his waist at 20 years old. He is now 36-0-1 (26 KO) and the WBC light middleweight champion.

What has he done?

For all the hype he has gotten he has beaten a bunch of gatekeepers and nothing more.

What makes it impressive is the kid is 20-years-old and is beating guys that some fighters won't take on until they are 25 or so.

His last five opponents were a combined 191-29-11 and that can't be overlooked. None of them were really that good but they are all capable veterans.

He knocked three of them out including iron-chinned Carlos Baldomir.

Pros: He comes into fights in great shape as he has gone 12 rounds in each of his last two fights. This is a big thing for a 20-year-old kid in my opinion.

He has a very good punch (although I think it is a little over hyped), throws punches in bunches, and keeps a solid work rate over the whole fight.

He is also very relaxed in a ring in front of a massive crowd.

Cons: He gets hit way to much and that will cost him as he moves up the ladder. He also shows very little head movment.

His offense is fine but the problem is going to be his defense. His punching power may be a little overrated but I won't put it as a con except for the fact that fans are expecting the knockout.

And the winner is!

This may come as a shock but for me it is Ismayl Sillakh hands down. The kid is a finished prodcut already and appears to be the total package.

He can punch, has good speed, and his defense is smooth. If this was a battle of who was going to be more famous it will be Alvarez but he has a lot of work to do but has time as he is only 20-years-old.

Sillakh is 26 and had a lot more amateur experience than Alvarez. In six years Alavarez may have corrected his mistakes and be a total beast.

At any rate Sillakh is the pick right now as I think he is the future kingpin at the light heavyweight division.
