The Mets have done wonders for their image and their credibility around baseball circles with the hiring of Sandy Alderson, J.P. Ricciardi and Paul DePodesta to the front office. The three of them give the Mets stability and legitimacy at the top of the organization, something they have not had a long time. Fred and Jeff Wilpon deserve credit for realizing what needed to be done, and for shelling out the big bucks to hire the three longtime former GMs to form a three-headed monster that will bring the Mets back to the promised land. Now that free agency has started, the Mets offseason is in full swing. I wouldn't expect the Mets to recklessly spend big money on fringe free agents any more. Jason Bay likely got the last big free agent contract the Mets will be willing to dish out. That's not to say that the Mets won't aggressively pursue free agents, just that the days of overpaying a guy just to get him are likely. Gone are the days of "making a splash." Fiscal responsibility is the name of the game. The Boston Red Sox have shown what a team can do when smart, new-age baseball men are in charge of a big-market team. Sandy Alderson and company will still spend what they want, when they want, but in this offseason I can't see the Mets making a play for any of the top free agents like Cliff Lee, Carl Crawford or Jayson Werth. Quite frankly, this free agent class is very top heavy. The quality after the few big names available drops dramatically. The Mets could look to the trade market to buy low on some guys. Maybe they'll go after some under-the-radar guys that they feel can succeed in Citi Field. The bottom line is that, for the first time in a long time, I have complete trust in this organization to make the right moves. DePodesta had a refreshingly honest comment during his introductory conference call last week. “We’re still going to be wrong, probably often, but hopefully we’re disciplined enough in our processes to be more right than we are wrong,” he said. “The guiding principle is uncertainty. We want to try to understand and corral that uncertainty as best we can to help us narrow our choices to guide our intuition to the best choice possible. Hopefully we’re right more often than we’re wrong and hopefully we’re right when it counts.” The "Moneyball" concept has been beaten into the ground, and DePodesta cleared up some misconceptions about it. “Moneyball has taken on a lot of connotations that weren’t intended," DePodesta said. "Moneyball doesn’t have anything to do with on-base percentage or statistics. It’s a constant investigation of stagnant systems, to see if you can find value where it isn’t readily apparent. It can be anything. At the time, it happened to be using statistics to make us better decisions. That’s not always the case. There are new frontiers we need to conquer.” With Alderson, DePodesta and Ricciardi at the helm, I think the resurrection of the Mets, while still in its infancy, is going to be fun to watch.
